Historical context
These six Klavierstücke, Op. 118, quickly garnered admiration upon their appearance. Heinrich von Herzogenberg, writing in 1894, recalled purchasing the “glorious Klavierstücke” (Op. 118 and 119) in February of that year, noting he could play the “glorious ballade” (Op. 118, No. 3) once or twice. He also observed that Frau Clara Schumann was “singing their praises” for these pieces during the summer at Interlaken.
Despite their initial impression, Herzogenberg noted in 1894 that while the set appeared easy, “ordinary mortals” often found themselves at a standstill past the reading stage. The esteemed Clara Schumann herself performed selections from the set; according to a historical account, Eugenie heard Clara play the Romance in F major and Intermezzo in E flat major, Op. 118, “most beautifully” shortly before Clara’s death.
