Historical context

This is the Fourth and last Suite of Vierne’s 24 Pièces de fantaisie, Op. 55, composed and published in 1927. With it Vierne completed the cycle of twenty-four character-pieces begun the year before - four suites of six pieces each, written around the time of his North American tour and full of dedications to the organists and builders, French, English and American, who had championed his music. Its six pieces round off what has become, after the symphonies, the most-played body of his organ music.
