Historical context

This is the First Suite of Vierne’s 24 Pièces de fantaisie, Op. 51, composed in 1926 and published the same year. It was the first of the four suites to be heard in public: Vierne played it on the colossal Wanamaker organ in New York on 4 February 1927, at the start of his celebrated North American tour. Like its three companion suites, it gathers six character-pieces of contrasting mood, several of them carrying dedications to friends and fellow musicians.
