Historical context

The Introduction, Passacaglia und Fuge, Op. 127 received its premiere in October 1913, performed by Karl Straube. This significant event took place on the occasion of the inauguration of the new organ in the Breslau Festival Hall, also identified as the Jahrhunderthalle in Breslau, as noted by both the book and Zeittafel.

Regarding the work itself, the book describes the piece as predominantly virtuosic, characterized by strong linear music. It is said to sometimes exude powerful force, at other times dwelling on ornamentation, and even radiating a certain mystical shimmer. However, the book also suggests that, when measured against truly great conceptual content, this three-part composition might fall somewhat short compared to other works of its kind.
