How to play

Registration
Lighter than BuxWV 149: Principal 8'+4' in manuals, no Mixture in the fugue; pedal 16'+8' without reed.
Tempo
More intimate — closer to chamber scale. Don't drive the fugue.
Articulation
Speaking, almost vocal articulation. Treat fugal entries as if they were sung by different singers.
Ornamentation
Restrained. Trill on the leading tone at the final cadence.

Historical context

The second of the two G-minor preludes, more concise and lyrical than BuxWV 149. A good piece for liturgical use where a major showpiece would be out of place.

Structure

4 sections: Prelude Fugue 1 Fugue 2 Fugue 3
