Historical context

The public’s first opportunity to hear the Piano Sonata No. 3 in F minor, Op. 5, came on March 10, 1884. On this significant occasion, the work was presented in Dresden by the renowned pianist Hans von Bülow. This premiere performance marked a crucial moment for the sonata, bringing it to life for listeners for the very first time. As Elisabet von Herzogenberg noted in 1884, it was von Bülow who introduced the “Pianoforte Sonata in F minor” to the world, shaping its initial reception and establishing its presence in the repertoire through his artistry.
