Historical context

The collection “Aus meinem Tagebuch,” Op. 82, contains genuine piano pieces which, as the book notes, “quickly conquered the widest circles of truly musical audiences.” The composer, as the book explains, presented this work as a result of his efforts to balance his playful drive with the joy of ‘secretly embedding’ musical ideas, aiming for a more balanced and accessible style. Band I, comprising twelve small piano pieces, was composed in 1904 in Munich. The ‘Bauern-Tanz’ in this first volume, according to the book, was adopted into the piano music, freely following Beethoven’s example of incorporating particularly successful, popular themes and movements.

Prompted by the great success of these initial piano pieces, the composer added three more volumes to the collection. Band II, with ten small piano pieces, followed in 1906, and Band III, with six small piano pieces, was composed in 1911, as noted in the Zeittafel of the book. However, the book also observes that the content of these later volumes, with a few exceptions, remained considerably behind that of the first volume.
